Sunderland Were Close - 21-Year-Old Reveals Summer Approach Before Joining Another Championship Side

Bailey Wright Reveals Sunderland Interest Before Joining Wigan Athletic

Bailey Wright has revealed that he was the subject of interest from Sunderland this summer before eventually joining Wigan Athletic.

The 21-year-old defender joined the Latics on a free transfer after leaving Bristol City at the end of last season.

Wright has now revealed that Sunderland were one of a number of clubs interested in signing him this summer, but he ultimately decided to join Wigan.

Wright Says He Was 'Flattered' By Sunderland Interest

"It was nice. At the end of the day, I had a few clubs interested in me, so I never felt under any pressure to rush into any decisions," Wright told the Wigan Post.

"It's humbling, and it's flattering when you get clubs showing an interest in you, especially clubs like Sunderland, who are a big club with a lot of history."

"But I spoke with Leam and with Rob Kelly, and I came up to the training ground and it just felt right."

Wright Believes Wigan Can Be A 'Springboard' For His Career

Wright is now looking forward to getting started at Wigan and believes the club can be a 'springboard' for his career.

"I'm really excited to get started," he said. "I've heard really good things about the club from other players."

"I think it can be a great springboard for my career. I want to play as many games as possible and help the team get promoted back to the Championship."
